Wrightsville Beach is all about being outside and enjoying the coast, whether you’re fishing off the pier, paddling to Masonboro Island or simply strolling The Loop. This guide highlights 11 ways to stay active, from kayaking and surfing to biking, playing pickleball and practicing yoga. No matter your age or skill level, you’ll find something to get your heart pumping.

1. Cast a Line from Johnnie Mercers Fishing Pier

At over 1,200 feet long, Johnnie Mercers Fishing Pier is a landmark for anglers. Pick up gear at the tackle shop, then try your luck with black drum, sheepshead or speckled trout. If you’re here on Feb. 1, the annual Johnnie Mercers Pier Dogfish Classic offers a fun, family-friendly catch-and-release tournament with prizes. Surf and shore fishing are also popular – just don’t forget your recreational fishing license!

2. Kayak to Masonboro Island Reserve

The longest undisturbed barrier island ecosystem in southern North Carolina, Masonboro Island Reserve is only accessible by water. Rent a kayak from Wrightsville Kayak Company and paddle ashore on the sound side, then cross the island to reach 8 miles of protected shoreline. Or, join Coastal Eco Adventures for a guided trip, complete with crabbing and a beach scavenger hunt.

3. Stand-Up Paddleboard on the Intracoastal Waterway

Glide along the Intracoastal Waterway on a stand-up paddleboard. Cape Fear Paddleboarding and Wrightsville SUP offer rentals, lessons and tours, while Epic Excursions provides guided boat charters to prime paddling spots.

4. Learn to Surf

Wrightsville Beach residents and visitors have been riding waves since 1909, when local Burke Haywood Bridges helped introduce surfing to the East Coast. More than a century later, the tradition continues with surf schools for every skill level. Mermaid Surf School specializes in women’s instruction, WB Surf Camp runs lessons for kids and adults and Wrightsville School of Surf is led by former pros. Private sessions and group camps make it easy to find your fit – just check seasonal availability before you go.

Wrightsville Performance Sailing also offers a one‑hour “Try Sailing” session, ideal for first‑timers.

6. Get into Watersports

From tubing to wakeboarding, Wrightsville Beach is built for high-energy fun on the water. Rent a boat from Nauti Times Rentals or Sea Gate Boating and load it up with extras like skis or a wakeboard. 8. Bike the River to Sea Bikeway

This 11-mile route connects Johnnie Mercers Fishing Pier to Wilmington’s Riverwalk, weaving through residential streets with off-road paths. Rent a bike from Sweetwater Surf Shop and enjoy the long ride.

9. Play Pickleball at Wrightsville Beach Park

11. Find Your Flow with a Relaxing Yoga Class

Take your yoga practice outdoors with BeUnlimited’s seasonal beach sessions on the Crystal Pier, or try something unique at SUP Yoga Center. Classes start on land with basic stand-up paddleboard instruction before paddling to a calm spot to anchor together for a floating yoga session. Beginners are welcome, and you might even spot dolphins or sea turtles while you flow.
