Known as the birthplace of surfing in North Carolina and a pioneer in East Coast surfing, Wrightsville Beach has earned its reputation as a top destination for surfers of all skill levels. Whether you're a beginner looking to catch your first wave or a seasoned surfer in search of a new surfing locale, Wrightsville Beach offers the perfect spot to paddle out. Here is everything you need to know about catching waves here:

Local Surf Spots

Wrightsville Beach offers a variety of surf breaks, each with its own unique appeal. On the northern end, near Shell Island Resort, you'll find a breathtaking stretch of beach with plenty of space to catch waves alongside fellow surfers. Public beach access points like Access #2 provide convenient amenities, including showers and restrooms for post-surf cleanup. A bit farther down, Access #4 is popular among locals for its sandbars that create rolling waves ideal for surfing.

While the area near Crystal Pier is one of the more crowded surf spots, walking just a few minutes north toward the Carolina Yacht Club can offer the same quality waves with a little extra breathing room. On the southern end of the island, a rock jetty separates Wrightsville Beach from Masonboro Island Reserve, North Carolina's longest undisturbed barrier island. Depending on the swell direction, waves peel off the jetty, and with the right tide and a southerly swell, surfers can catch long right-breaking waves. If you plan to surf in this area, keep in mind that surfing is prohibited within 100 feet of the Masonboro Inlet Jetty.

For those paddling out on their own, it's important to note that during the summer season (Memorial Day to Labor Day), the Town of Wrightsville Beach establishes designated surf zones. Surfing is prohibited in areas directly in front of lifeguard stands, which are marked by black-and-white flags, whenever lifeguards are on duty (typically from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.). Additionally, surfing is always prohibited within 350 feet of Johnnie Mercers Fishing Pier and Crystal Pier.
